I've posted this earlier, but I'm going to post it again:
Your final presentation for class will be the final week of class, May 3rd and May 5th, not finals week. (I do this because there's no way to give everyone the time they deserve during a two hour final.) We'll be presenting both Monday and Wednesday, and yes, you need to be present both days, and you need to be prepared to present either day.

Your final will consist of your blog- complete with all assignments and all chapters of the book discussed. You'll also have a complete website and at least twelve matted prints. These prints should be from a new project of your own choosing, using some of the techniques you learned in class. The prints and the mats need to be perfect, no dings, no mis-cuts, no spots no out-of-focus images.

Frank will be discussing the context of his pinhole/ambrotype imagery, and how it fits in during this time in photographic history and where it is going. Frank is a cool guy that makes great images. You should attend if at all possible!

Hi guys- it's your lucky day. I've been sick all weekend and figured that I'd be better by now, but I'm not. So we won't be having class today. Instead, the websites that we were going to review today, we'll review on Wednesday- along with your six matted prints from Cooper Lake State Park. Please use this day wisely! Take the time to complete reading your book, shoot images for your final project, work on past assignments, print and mat images for Wednesday or final.

Okay, I admit it, the South Unit of Cooper Lake State Park isn't the Grand Canyon. Still, we had good weather, no snakes and no mosquitoes. And there were still plenty of opportunities for great images. The best thing about the park is how close we are to it. Try to get back there in the fall and winter and photograph the beauty of East Texas!

Today we'll continue working on our websites. You'll need to complete your website by next Monday. It should include a home page, a resume, portfolio of images, artist statement, bio, and contact info. Also, please print at least six images from Cooper Lake State Park by next Wednesday. Yes, you certainly can go back, or go to the North Unit!

For today I've asked you to start thinking about your website. Provide me with a skeleton of the website structure, write a resume, artist statement and bio. Your site needs to include a home page, portfolio and contact page along with resume, statement and bio. We'll start working in iweb today, and you'll be responsible for five different versions of a home page. You need to change the image, color, text and composition for each page. You can save them by using a screen shot (shift/command4).

Please make use of the lab outside of class time to experiment with iWeb. By next Monday, I'd like to review your different home pages, but you should also have your resume and artist statement finished.

Change of plans! Your printing assignment for next week has changed. Instead of six b/w images, please print two panoramas. Put six of your best panoramas on your blog. These are due on Wednesday March 31. Yes, they do need to be matted. How big? Well, I'd say make the largest dimension no bigger than the width of the roll paper, which is 24". Yes, they do need to be matted. Yes, they do need to be matted. Oh, and if you're wondering, Yes, they do need to be matted.

Wow, we have a lot to do! Today we're going to print our David Hockney cubist images for the Student Center. You also need take one image, convert it to b/w six different ways. Add several of the Cooper images that you convert to B/W for your blog as well. We're going to try our darnedest to print Cooper images for Jalapeno's Restaurant. We're going to have an opening up there once we get the show changed out. Next Monday will be a work day, as I'll be in Paris setting up my solo exhibition. On Tuesday I'll be lecturing and judging their art exhibition. On Wednesday of next week, you have six b/w images due... printed and matted! Please add the sixth chapter of the book to your blog.

Your shooting assignment for the week is do make at least six GREAT panoramas. Go to Cooper Lake State Park or one of the nature preserves, or shoot some of the small towns in the area. Explore! Be creative! This is your time, let your light shine!!

Cooper Texas is one of my very favorite little towns in East Texas. Why? Well, treasures like Mabel Wheat, Miller's Pharmacy, Jalapeno's restaurant, and really nice people... Both classes met in the town square for a fun day of shooting and dodging the rain. The light, especially in the afternoon was beautiful, so I'm hopeful that we got some great shots! If you missed the trip, be sure to drive up on your own and explore and photograph. And stop in and say "hello!" to Mabel, get a root beer float, and be sure to see the wonderful mural by Lloyd Goff in the very nicely preserved post office...

Have a terrific break! There will be a nice surprise waiting for you on your return, the lab has all new iMacs! Please shoot a bunch of pictures over break, of your family, friends- whatever you're doing. and read the next two chapters in your book, you'll have the first week back to post them to your blog, but might as well spend your time wisely!

On Monday when we return, we'll work on our Cooper pictures and we'll talk about converting them into black and white. It's not as "black and white" as you'd think. We'll also start printing bg "cubist" images for the student center, so if you don't have one that you're in love with, shoot more over break. The entire school is going to see your work!

Finally, consider signing up for the May-Mini class on pinhole photography. It's going to be ten fast days of making cameras and shooting and working in the darkroom and hanging a show and making a camera obscura and visiting cool little towns and printing cool pics that you took with a box and a hole and I'll show you how I make my AWARD-WINNING pinhole pictures...and, jeez, isn't that enough?!? It's ten days in a row, you get 3 hours credit, it'll be a blast.

I call it "Stealing from David Hockney." Don't worry, Sir Hockney stole his idea from several other artists, Picasso, Braque and Joyce Neimanas to name a few. You're in a good company of thieves...

Because you also have the first chapter of the book, Advice to Young Artists in a Postmodern Era, by William Dunning due, and a shooting assignment, we won't meet for class on Monday, February 15. Instead, you can use that time for your shooting assignment. Trust me you're going to have fun doing this one. You'll need to make three images using the alphabet- not photographing actual letters, but using the forms of the alphabet to create compositions. You'll need to find three of every letter. Two complete alphabet have to come from one specific place, be one specific theme (the library for example, or a little town, a state park...) the third can come from anywhere. For one set we'll crop them square. One set will be in color, one b/w, and one mixed! All images are due W. February 17. We'll process and catagorize them in class.

One of my favorite photographers, Lee Friedlander, as he see's himself...
Today we'll upload our self-portraits into Lightroom, and process and post at least six of them. At least one of them should be recognizable as you. If we have time, we'll do a simple exercise in Photoshop, using your head as the subject... just how symmetrical are you? This assignment will show you the very basics of layers and masks.

This week we're going to focus on the Lightroom software. You'll import all of your images into Lightroom and store them on your hard drive. Lightroom is perfect for storing and processing images. You can also make websites and slideshows from Lightroom. I'll provide a template for notes.

Your shooting assignment for the weekend is to make self-portraits. A self-portrait can be a photograph of you, a photograph of thing that you love, of things that you hate. What defines you? What makes you particular, different than everyone else in the room, different than everyone else on campus? What makes you the same? Bring your images to class on Monday, we'll upload and process them in Lightroom.

I ran across the work of Peter Miller tonight and just think that it's wonderful! He's been photographing the people and places of Vermont for fifty years or more. They have an honesty about them that is so lacking in a lot of current work. He's got a limited edition hand-made book that looks wonderful; it includes an original signed print. PDNB is a photography gallery in the Dallas design district. This month they have an excellent show of landscapes by Rhondal McKinney. This prints are small by today's standards. They are contact prints from 8x10" negatives. Delightful, delicate images, I hope to someday meet Mr. McKinney, and really regret not going to the opening. Anyone want to give me $2500.00 for a print?

W. 1.27 Portraits pf Strangers

Today we're going to use the class time to photograph each other. We'll pair up in groups, and you need to shoot at least fifty images of your partners, from which you'll pick four great portraits. You may have to work with each other after class or over the weekend, so be sure to get each others contact info! Remember a good portrait tells us something about the person in the portrait. You'll need to talk with your "client" and find out something about them. Try to somehow give us clues about them in your photographs.

On it you'll keep your class assignments and your writings and notes. The first assignment for your blog is to record the answers to the questionnaire from the syllabus. Also, each and every week you need to read and comment on an event related to art or photography. This can be something that you find in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor or any other major newspaper. You can also report on articles that you find in any of the many art journals, either online or magazines. We'll track some of them down in class, but one that might (should) interest you is Glass Tire.
